Fun Facts about Bolts

Metric bolts have a number of different grades / tensile , in most cases the higher the grade the better the bolt, however this doesn’t always apply with each tensile having a specific purpose.

Grade 8.8 is used in 90% of cases; it’s stronger and durable than the Class 6 but not as strong as a 12.9 Cap Screw. For day to day use the 8.8 grade is perfect, where high performance is concerned i.e motorsport you would commonly see 12.9 Cap Screws, these are commonly used on high wear suspension parts.

Along with tensile comes thread pitch and again while the standard pitches account for 90% of the industry fine pitches have their place too.

We commonly see a fine pitch bolt used where used high vibrations may occur or where more tightness is required from a specific size. In simple terms a fine thread bolt is generally stronger than its coarse thread brother and will achieve more tightening pre load for less tightening torque.

Imperial bolts follow a similar theme to metric in terms of grades and pitch albeit less options.

Class 8 imperial is the most common and covers the majority of cases perfectly.

Within imperial are two common thread pitches UNC & UNF, coarse being UNC and fine thread being UNF.
